Digital Fluency Intensive Day 5

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Making teaching and learning visible. When talking about visibility, it means can you see it? No black and white.Visible learning and teaching involves whānau. They can access what their child is learning on school sites and on the parent portal. Success measured is having the ability to read the teachers mind. It is a cultural thing - being able to identify things that people are talking and/or thinking about develops cultural capital. Being explicit allows children to know that this is what I expect and this is what I want you to do. Ensuring that the planning, process, outcomes, assessment is readily available makes it helpful for whānau and other audiences to get an insight on what learning and teaching is happening. As teachers, visibility is important because we shouldn't surprise our learners. Surprises in any fashion for learners who are challenged don’t go down well. If you want it to go well, they need to be scaffolded.

The content that we put in front of our children needs to be inspiring, engaging and interactive.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

As a teacher that works in a Digital Learning Environment, I am using sites everyday. Today we learnt tips that allowed us to navigate our way around Google Sites much faster and easier. I was able to hide pages, insert YouTube playlists, embed Google Group, embedding a twitter feed and even sort my page out to look clean and tidy. What I have learnt today will help me learn how to use Google Sites much more efficiently and I can use this new information in both my professional and personal life.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I could make a site for my learners that will allow them access to different learning activities when they go away for independent work. They could even access it from home! It would be exciting to come up with different activities that assist their learning, and can even be fun. Children could learn how to use these activities and practice them at home for homework.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Being more confident in sites means that I can use it in my everyday life. I have become more confident in navigating my way around the sites and can use them both in my professional life and personal life.

  1. Hi Sarah, Developing rich content on your site fr your learners is a daunting task and it is great to see that you are maximising this opportunity to learn how to do this more efficiently and effectively.

You are blessed to work alongside some real experts in your school AND to be sitting alongside experts from other schools in the DFI. Never b slow to notice what others are doing and to ask for help from them. We all started out as beginners in this :)
