KPMG #1 Reflection

Reflection

Today's session was very helpful. We had a closer look at our challenges. My challenge is "A large number of our Year 5 and 6 learners are demonstrating a lack of knowledge in key areas of Mathematics making it difficult to use new strategies to access their expected curriculum level." I have been thinking into how I can create a tool that would help this challenge, but it was helpful having input from the others in our group.

We spoke about the 3W's - what is working, what isn't working and what opportunities can you sense. This activity gave each of us an opportunity to get feedback from our colleagues. When each person shared, we would think about what we can add that would help their thinking process. The feedback would help us think about the prototype we would start planning next.

Some of the feedback I got was: collect more data, have a conversation with Rebecca Henderson and make sure I am confident going forward with my challenge statement.

I am most definitely looking forward to continuing this exciting journey on tackling my challenge head-on, alongside Rebecca!

Prototype

Is it low risk? Yes it is. We are using google apps, which we are provided with through our schools, and if we are collaborating with each other (Rebecca and I), then we can ask our colleagues if they would like to help with the making of resources. It can be conducted with a safe audience at a minimal cost.

Is it quick and easy? This prototype that we were thinking to create was quick to plan, and easy to understand between the two of us. However, looking at the site that we will be creating (along with the resources), it will be something that is created over time.

Is it generative? Not only is this idea able to help our learners practice what they are “lacking”, it will also be a helpful resource for teachers to identify what learners are on, and they can direct them to the site that helps. This idea will continue to grow, with the bank of resources growing bigger, and hopefully it is the same as the amount of collaborators.

How could you make a prototype of your ideas you are exploring to help with your problem? I will be collaborating with Rebecca on a google site that has 3 (maybe more) different curriculum levels worth of resources. These resources will target the “gaps” that are essentially stopping our learners from moving to where they need to be/have the potential to be.

Who could you test it on? This collaborative site between Rebecca and I would be tested on our learners this year. By only having them as our testers, we are able to play “trial and error” to identify the WWW’s. Once we know it is successful, that is when we can branch off to others (colleagues, cluster staff, etc.)

What would you have to do? We have to make generated maths resources depending on the level that we are focusing on (myself is Level 2/3 and Rebecca is 3/4). Hoping to build on this idea by adding the whole self-assessment aspect to it.

Who could help you? Rebecca, myself, our colleagues, people who want to submit questions for the site.
