Reading Practise Intensive Day 5: Planning a Reading Programme
I found today's RPI enjoyable and handy for my teaching practise. There were a few things that I have already implemented in my classroom, and some ideas that I will look more into because they could fit nicely into my classroom.
I don't necessarily use a timetable in my classroom, however my learners know that we have a routine that we stick to during the week. After today's session, I think that having a timetable will not only make sure that my class know what they are doing, but keep me accountable (as the teacher).
We took a look at the different approaches to Learner Timetables, and what we are providing our learners with to make the most of their learning. As a Year 6 teacher, I have been able to think about how I want my learners to work in my classroom. Have I empowered my learners to be active participants in the learning process? How can I give more agency to my learners? There are things that I already use in my classroom, but as teachers, we love new ideas and resources that keep our learners busy.
One thing that I will definitely take away is how we use our resources for Independent Activities.
When using Independent Resources in class, I usually give my learners free reign of our choice board. I have given a few follow up tasks, but I don't explicitly tell my learners to complete them. After this session, I will definitely be adding these gems into my choice board so that they have more opportunities for learning.
EPIC was one of the main resources I gave my learners. I will be using the tools in this resource with explicit instructions for my learners to explore and practise their skill building. I have also seen how the other resources we explored today could work in my class too.
Something Jess Aitken said to me was to make sure that your learners are engaged in the learning rather than the "activity" aspect. This will help me to make sure I am being explicit for what I want my learners to be doing.
Another successful RPI day!
